Making Food Fun: Our Sausage-Making Day at The Tartan Butchers

How do you help a child build a happier relationship with food? Sometimes the answer is wonderfully simple: you let them make it themselves. 🌭

Recently, some of our foster carers and the children in their care enjoyed an unforgettable visit to The Tartan Butchers in Faversham. It was a hands-on, heart-warming day filled with learning, laughter, and a rather large haul of homemade sausages.

In this post, we will share how the day came about, what the children got up to, and why experiences like this matter so much for young people in foster care. We will also say a heartfelt thank you to the kind local business that made it all possible.

How the Visit Came Together

This special day started with one foster carer's thoughtful idea. Our wonderful carer, Kelly, wanted to help her young person build a better, more confident relationship with food.

Mealtimes can feel overwhelming for some children, particularly those who have experienced disruption or uncertainty. Kelly understood this, so she went looking for a creative way to make food feel fun rather than stressful.

She reached out to The Tartan Butchers to book a private class. What happened next was a lovely surprise. The team generously offered a free session for our Lighthouse Fostering families, opening their doors with warmth and no expectations whatsoever.

A Behind-the-Scenes Shop Tour

The day began with a full tour of the shop. The children explored the space, asked plenty of questions, and discovered exactly what happens behind the counter.

During the tour, they learned about:

  • Where meat comes from and the journey it takes to reach the shop
  • How meat is prepared safely and skilfully by the team
  • The importance of respecting the animal at every stage

This kind of honest, age-appropriate learning gave the children a genuine understanding of their food. It helped demystify something that can often feel abstract on a supermarket shelf.

The Best Part: Making Their Own Sausages

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. The children learned how sausages are made from start to finish, and they got fully stuck in.

They piped, twisted, and shaped their very own creations. Sleeves were rolled up, hands got busy, and the whole room filled with concentration and giggles.

This hands-on activity gave the children real ownership over their food. There is something powerful about making a meal with your own hands. It builds curiosity, confidence, and a sense of pride that no amount of encouragement at the dinner table can match.

By the end, every child had something to show for their efforts. We also brought home a rather impressive mountain of sausages! 😂

Why Experiences Like This Matter

Could a single afternoon really make a difference to a child's relationship with food? We believe it can.

For children who sometimes find food challenging, this visit was deeply valuable. It turned a source of anxiety into a source of fun and achievement.

Hands-on experiences like this offer several lasting benefits:

  • They build confidence by giving children a sense of accomplishment.
  • They reduce anxiety by making food feel approachable and enjoyable.
  • They encourage curiosity about where food comes from and how it is made.
  • They create connection between carers, children, and the wider community.

The children came away proud of what they had made. That pride, and the positive memories attached to it, can gently shift how a young person feels about food long after the day is over.

A Huge Thank You to The Tartan Butchers

We cannot thank the team at The Tartan Butchers enough. They hosted us with kindness, patience, and genuine generosity, asking for nothing in return.

This is exactly the kind of community spirit that makes such a difference to fostering families. Local businesses that open their doors help create the everyday moments that children remember for years.
