East Sussex Easter Family Event – A Creative Celebration!

Spring brings a wonderful sense of renewal, and there is no better way to celebrate the season than by bringing people together. Recently, our team at Lighthouse Fostering had the absolute pleasure of hosting our East Sussex Easter Family Event. It was a day filled with laughter, vibrant colours, and brilliant imaginations running wild.

We gathered our incredible local families at Slap N Dash, a fantastic local craft centre, for an afternoon dedicated entirely to artistic fun. Watching the children and young people express themselves through art was truly a joy. From painting bright pottery to carefully crafting Decopatch animals, everyone made something uniquely special to take home and treasure.

In this post, we want to share the wonderful highlights from our Easter celebration. We will also explore exactly why hosting a regular family event is such a vital part of the fostering support we provide to our dedicated carers and the young people they look after.

Coming Together at Slap N Dash

Finding the right venue for a fostering get-together is always important. We want a space that feels welcoming, inclusive, and entirely focused on fun. Slap N Dash proved to be the absolute perfect setting for our East Sussex Easter Family Event. As soon as our families arrived, the room quickly filled with the sound of cheerful chatter and the excitement of choosing which craft to tackle first.

Events like these are a cornerstone of the East Sussex fostering community. When a family arrives at a Lighthouse Fostering event, they step into a safe, understanding space. Carers can relax knowing that everyone in the room understands the unique journey of fostering. The children can mingle, play, and create alongside peers who share similar life experiences.

This sense of belonging is incredibly powerful. It transforms a simple Saturday afternoon outing into a deeply meaningful experience. The shared laughter over a messy paint palette or a tricky piece of glue helps to forge lasting bonds between our families.

Unleashing Creativity and Imagination

The absolute highlight of the day was seeing the sheer creativity of our young people. Children often find it easier to express their feelings, hopes, and personalities through art rather than words. We were completely blown away by the artistic skills on display across the room.

We offered a few different activities to ensure everyone, regardless of their age or artistic confidence, could get involved and create a masterpiece.

Painting Pottery Masterpieces

Pottery painting was a massive hit among the children and the adults alike! Each young person carefully selected their own ceramic piece to decorate. We saw everything from brightly patterned mugs and bowls to beautifully detailed Easter eggs and springtime animals.

Watching the children mix colours and focus on their designs was wonderful. Pottery painting requires a lovely balance of concentration and freedom. The young people could follow strict patterns if they wanted to, or simply let their brushes dance across the ceramics. There are no wrong answers in art, and this freedom allows children to build their self-esteem with every brushstroke.

Decorating Decopatch Animals

Alongside the pottery, we also set up a fantastic Decopatch station. For those who might not know, Decopatch involves tearing up beautifully patterned papers and using a special glue-varnish to stick them onto papier-mâché figures.

Our young people chose from a variety of animal shapes and spent hours carefully layering the colourful paper. This activity is brilliant for developing fine motor skills, but more importantly, it results in a striking, vibrant ornament. The pride on the children's faces as they held up their finished, glossy Decopatch animals was incredibly moving. They had taken a blank shape and turned it into a vibrant piece of art that they could keep forever.

Why Quality Family Time Matters

While the painted mugs and paper animals are wonderful keepsakes, the true value of our East Sussex Easter Family Event lies in the shared experience. Fostering a child is a deeply rewarding commitment, but it also comes with its fair share of busy schedules, meetings, and daily challenges.

Taking a step back to simply enjoy a fun activity together is crucial for building a strong, resilient family unit.

Building Trust Through Shared Play

For children who have experienced trauma or instability, trust is often something that needs to be slowly and carefully rebuilt. Play is one of the most effective ways to achieve this. When a foster carer sits down next to a child, picks up a paintbrush, and joins in the fun, it sends a powerful message. It tells the child that the adult is present, engaged, and genuinely enjoys their company.

These moments of shared focus and mutual enjoyment help to lower a child's defensive barriers. It creates a relaxed environment where natural, easy conversations can flow. Sometimes, the most important chats happen while two people are looking at a ceramic dog rather than looking directly at each other.

Creating Happy, Lasting Memories

Many children in the care system lack a consistent timeline of positive childhood memories. A core goal of therapeutic fostering is to help young people build a new, joyful narrative.

Attending a family event provides a brilliant opportunity to lay down these positive markers. When a child looks at the Decopatch animal sitting on their bedroom shelf, they will not just see a craft project. They will remember the fun afternoon at Slap N Dash. They will remember the supportive adults around them, the delicious snacks, and the feeling of being celebrated. These happy memories act as emotional anchors, providing comfort and stability as the child grows.

Strengthening the East Sussex Fostering Community

Beyond the immediate benefits to the individual families, these gatherings play a crucial role in strengthening our wider agency network. Lighthouse Fostering is fundamentally built on the idea of community. We never want our carers to feel isolated or unsupported in their roles.

While our dedicated social workers provide robust, professional fostering support on a daily basis, peer support is equally vital.

Connecting Carers

An event like this allows foster carers to connect in an informal, relaxed setting. While the children are happily engaged in painting and crafting, the adults have the chance to catch up over a cup of tea.

They can swap stories, share practical advice, and offer empathetic listening ears to one another. Only another foster carer truly understands the specific highs and lows of the role. Facilitating these organic connections is a massive part of how we ensure our carers feel valued and sustained over the long term.

A Wrap-Around Fostering Support System

We see our events programme as an extension of our core fostering support package. We want to wrap our arms around our fostering families, providing not just professional guidance, but also spaces for joy, relaxation, and celebration.

The success of the East Sussex Easter Family Event perfectly illustrates this approach. By taking care of the venue, the activities, and the logistics, we allow our carers to focus entirely on what matters most: spending quality, uninterrupted time with the young people they look after.

Looking Forward to More Celebrations

We had an absolutely brilliant time at Slap N Dash, and we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the day so special. The room was bursting with pure imagination, and we are so proud of the talented young artists within our community.

Seeing the positive impact of this family event has only made us more excited for the future. We are already busy planning our next gatherings, ensuring that the East Sussex fostering community continues to have regular opportunities to connect, create, and celebrate together.
