At Lighthouse Fostering, we are immensely proud to celebrate the incredible achievement of one of our dedicated foster carers, Dave Springett. On Sunday, 27th April 2025, Dave triumphantly crossed the finish line of the renowned TCS London Marathon—not only a testament to his perseverance but also to raise vital funds for the Young Lives Foundation (YLF). His dedication, resilience, and generosity have been a true inspiration to all.
The Journey to Marathon Day
Dave’s marathon story is one of grit and determination. Since New Year’s Day, he has taken on a rigorous training schedule, running four days a week, with distances ranging from three miles to an impressive sixteen miles in preparation. However, his road to the marathon was far from straightforward.
“It’s been tough. Cold, dark, wet, and very, very windy at times,” Dave admitted. “I’m at that point where my body isn’t too happy with me, especially my ankles!” Despite these challenges, including discovering a hamstring tear just six weeks before race day, Dave refused to give up. With investment in quality running gear, treatments like sports massages, and sheer determination, he kept going, even completing a seven-mile run the day after learning of his injury.
“The ups and downs have been emotional, but I knew I wanted to do this,” Dave shared.
Reflections on Race Day
The big day was a mix of emotions for Dave. While he had been nervous in the run-up to the marathon, nothing could have fully prepared him for the effects the heat would have during the second half of the race. Nevertheless, the extraordinary atmosphere and support from the crowd spurred him on.
“What a brutal but unforgettable day!” Dave reflected after the marathon. “The weather made it tougher, but it was also what brought so many people out. Seeing supporters from Young Lives Foundation and my own cheer squad along the route was amazing.”
Although he admitted to feeling disappointed with his finishing time, the overall experience remains a cherished memory. The outpouring of support from family, friends, and the Lighthouse Fostering community, cheering him on every step of the way, meant the world to him.
Running for a Greater Purpose
Dave’s efforts extended beyond personal achievement; he took on this monumental challenge to raise funds for the Young Lives Foundation, a Kent-based children’s charity dedicated to empowering vulnerable young people through advocacy, mentoring, and youth programmes.
“I’m proud to be the only runner supporting the Young Lives Foundation in this marathon. Giving back to them feels incredible, especially after everything they’ve done for us,” Dave said.
Thanks to his efforts, an amazing sum has been raised for YLF, supporting their work in ensuring young people feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Breaking the £1,000 donation mark left Dave "blown away," with every penny going to this vital cause.
Join Dave in Making a Difference
There’s still time to contribute to Dave’s fundraising efforts for the Young Lives Foundation. If you’d like to show your support, you can donate directly at Dave’s Fundraising Page.
The TCS London Marathon app also allowed supporters to send motivational “Belief Boosters,” which Dave described as one of the highlights of his day. Messages of encouragement appeared on big screens along the course, showcasing the incredible community effort behind his achievement.
A Community Success
At Lighthouse Fostering, we couldn’t be prouder of Dave—not just as a marathon runner but as an outstanding foster carer. His resilience mirrors the positive difference he makes in the lives of the young people he supports.
“We’ve been cheering Dave on since the beginning,” said the team at Lighthouse Fostering. “His passion for helping others and dedication to the Young Lives Foundation has inspired us all.”
Now, as Dave takes the time to rest and recover, we want to celebrate this fantastic accomplishment and remember the importance of supporting one another. His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together to back someone’s dream. Thank you, Dave, for inspiring us all!
